Conceptual Instructions

This document presents the steps needed to add headings to a Microsoft Word document. Students will use the Apply Stiles dialog box which contains a list of styles to apply. They will also use short cuts to apply headings. Microsoft Word has seven heading levels. They are called Heading 1, heading 2, etc. They can also copy and paste formatting in documents with short cuts.

Cookbook Instructions

fTo apply a heading with the Apply Stiles dialog box, Add appropriate Heading text in your document in its own paragraph. Access the Styles group of the Home ribbon. The Styles submenu is the first control in the Styles group. Use your Up and Down Arrow keys to locate the Apply Stiles option. Note the short cut Control+Shift+S. The Apply Stiles dialog box opens in a list view. Use the Up and Down Arrow keys to locate the heading you want to add. Press the Enter key. Instead of using the Apply Stiles dialog box, you can use Control+Alt+1 to apply a level one heading, Control+Alt+2 to apply a level 2 heading, etc. You can also copy and paste formatting. To do this, locate a paragraph with the heading you want to copy. Use the Control+Alt+C short cut to copy the formatting. Put your cursor on the text you want to paste the formatting. Then press the Control+Alt+V short cut.

Trainer Notes

Before applying headings, take the time to consider the orbanization of your document. A Chapter might get a level one heading. You may want to use a level two heading for a subchapter, etc. These headings will allow you to navigate through your document quickly. If your document is marked up correctly, you will be able to create a table of contents in Microsoft word and other applications.
