Within the Windows 10 Start Menu, you can pin and unpin items for easy access.  While hot keys and the Windows Taskbar are nice, you may have a lot more applications than will reasonably fit in the Taskbar.

By organizing the pinned applications in your Start Menu, you can easily navigate and launch your favorite applications.

Pin an Application to the Start Menu

To pin an application to the Start Menu

  • Open the Start Menu (WINDOWS KEY or CTRL-ESCAPE)
  • Input the name of the application you’d like to pin
  • Focus on the application in the search results
  • Open the Windows Application Menu (WINDOWS APPLICATION KEY or SHIFT-F10)
  • Focus on and Activate “Pin to Start”

Unpin Applications from the Start Menu

To unpin an application from the Start Menu:

  • Open the Start Menu (WINDOWS KEY or CTRL-ESCAPE)
  • Press RIGHT ARROW to move into the list of pinned applications
  • Navigate the pinned applications with ALL FOUR ARROW KEYS
  • When focused on the application you’d like to unpin, open the Windows Application Menu (WINDOWS APPLICATION KEY or SHIFT-F10)

Move Pinned Applications via the Keyboard

To move an application:

  • Open the Start Menu (WINDOWS KEY or CTRL-ESCAPE)
  • Press RIGHT ARROW to move into the list of pinned applications

Once focused on an application you’d like to move, bypass your screen reader and activate the command to move the application icon.

You must bypass your screen reader each time you execute the command

The screen reader bypass commands are:

  • NVDA MODIFIER-F2

After bypassing the screen reader, execute the command to move the application

  • Press and hold ALT-SHIFT and don’t let go
  • Press ANY ARROW KEY to move the application UP, DOWN, RIGHT or LEFT

To check the location of the application, use ALL FOUR ARROW KEYS to check it’s location relative to the other pinned items.
