Create Hot Keys for Desktop Shortcuts

Check out our Windows Textbooks

In the last lesson, I showed you how to create a shortcut on the Desktop that would reboot your computer. In this lesson, I’ll show you how to add shortcut keys to Desktop shortcuts.  With shortcut keys on Desktop shortcuts, you can activate the shortcut from anywhere within Windows.

In this lesson, I’ll use the Restart shortcut as an example.

Open Shortcut Properties

Focus on the Desktop and place focus on the Restart icon.  Once focused on the icon, open the icon properties. There are two ways in which to do this:

  • Open  the Windows Application Menu and activate “Properties”
  • Focus on the icon and press ALT-ENTER

Create the Shortcut Key

Once focused in the properties, navigate to the “Shortcut Key” field. Once focused in the field, type the keystroke you’d like to use as the shortcut key.

Don’t attempt to type the shortcut, actually execute it.

After executing the command, it’s inserted into the shortcut key field.

Activate the OK button to save the changes.

When you use the keystroke from anywhere within Windows, the shortcut is activated and your computer will reboot.
