Many recommend organizing Internet Explorer Favorites via the Favorites folder of Windows.  I like the “Organize Favorites” dialog. Let’s explore this dialog and everything you can do to organize your favorites in Internet Explorer.

Open the Organize Favorites Dialog

Within Internet Explorer, open the Organize Favorites dialog from within the Favorites Menu:

  • Open the Favorites Menu (ALT-A)
  • Within the menu, activate “Organize Favorites”

The Organize Favorite Dialog

The Organize Favorites dialog consists of several controls:

  • At the top is a tree view containing all your favorites and favorite folders
  • At the bottom of the dialog are a number of buttons:
    • New Folder
    • Rename
    • Delete
    • Close

Navigate among the controls within the dialog with TAB and SHIFT-TAB.

Navigating the Tree View

The tree view is located at the top of the dialog.  The tree view contains all of the folders and favorites in your Favorites menu.

Navigate the tree view with the following commands:

  • Expand a branch RIGHT ARROW
  • Close a branch LEFT ARROW
  • Move to the parent folder of a focused item BACKSPACE
  • Navigate among individual items in the tree view UP AND DOWN ARROW

Let’s explore how to organize your favorites through the dialog.

Delete Favorites or Folders

There are two ways to delete a favorite or folder within the Organize Favorite dialog.

  • Using the keyboard
  • Using the Delete button

Delete a Favorite or Folder via the keyboard

Within the tree view, focus on the favorite or folder you’d like to delete.  Once focused on a favorite or folder, activate the DELETE KEY on your keyboard.

The favorite or folder is deleted.

If you delete a folder, focus is removed from the tree view.  Use TAB and SHIFT-TAB to return to the tree view.

Delete a Favorite or Folder via the Delete Button

Within the tree view, focus on the favorite or folder you’d like to delete.  Once focused on a favorite or folder, activate the “Delete” button within the dialog.

The favorite or folder is deleted.

If you delete a folder, focus is removed from the tree view.  Use TAB and SHIFT-TAB to return to the tree view.

Rename Favorites or Folders

You can rename folders or Favorites using the Rename button of the dialog or a Windows keyboard command.

To rename a folder or Favorite using the Windows rename keyboard command:

  • Press F2 (This is the Windows command to rename items)
  • The name is placed in edit mode.  Type the new name for the item
  • Press ENTER

The folder or Favorite is renamed and focus is returned to the tree view.

Rename an Item using the “Rename” Button

To rename a folder or Favorite using the Rename button of the Organize Favorites dialog:

Create a New Folder

You can create a new folder or sub folder within the Organize Favorites dialog.

To create a folder or sub folder

  • Focus on the folder in which you’d like to create a new folder
    • To create a new folder within Favorites, remain focused in the main folder
    • To create a new sub folder, focus on the branch into which you’d like to create a new folder and expand it with RIGHT ARROW

Move items within the Organize Favorites Dialog

  • Activate the OK button within the dialog

The focused item is moved to the new location within your Favorites.

Move Favorites within the Tree View

This is my favorite feature of the Organize Favorites dialog! You can move Favorites and folders up and down within the tree view.  To move favorites up and down within the tree view:

  • Focus on a Favorite or Folder you’d like to move (You can also focus on an item within a sub folder)
  • Press ALT-UP ARROW to move the focused item above the previous item in the tree view
  • Press ALT-DOWN ARROW to move the focused item below the next item in the tree view
  • Once the item is located where you’d like it in the tree view, release all keys

After configuring all the changes you’d like within the dialog, activate the “Close” button to close the dialog.  All changes are immediately reflected within the Favorites menu of Internet Explorer.
