In this lesson, I’ll show you how to create a home page in Internet Explorer.  There are several choices from which you can choose when creating a home page:

  • Set a single home page
  • Set multiple tabs as a home page
  • Use the default web page
  • Use a new tab as a home page

I’ll show you how to do each of these in this lesson.

Navigate to your Home Page from Anywhere in Internet Explorer

When in Internet Explorer, move focus to your home page at any time with the keyboard command ALT-HOME.  When you press ALT-HOME, the web page configured as the home page in Internet Options is loaded into the browser window.

Configuring a Single Home Page

There are two ways in which to configure a single home page within Internet Explorer.

Input the Address Manually

The home page is configured within the Internet Options dialog.  To open the Internet Options dialog:

  • Open the Tools Menu (ALT-T)
  • Activate “Internet Options (O)

By default, focus is placed in the home page edit field.  Input the address of the home page you’d like to use (for example, www.blind.training).

After inputting the address, navigate to the OK button and activate the button with SPACEBAR. The home page for your browser is changed to the address input in the edit field.

Use the Currently Focused Web Page

Load the web page you’d like to use as your home page within the browser window.  For example, visit www.google.com in your browser.

After loading the web page you’d like to use as your home page, focus in the Internet Options dialog:

  • Open the Tools Menu (ALT-T)
  • Activate “Internet Options (O)

Within the dialog, navigate to the “Use Current” button and activate it. The address of the focused page is placed in the edit field.

Navigate to the OK button and activate it to save the changes and close the dialog.

The focused web page is now the home page for Internet Explorer

Use Multiple Tabs for a Home Page

There are two ways in which to configure multiple tabs as your home page.  They are much the same as described above.

Input Multiple Addresses Manually

The home page is configured within the Internet Options dialog.  To open the Internet Options dialog:

  • Open the Tools Menu (ALT-T)
  • Activate “Internet Options (O)

By default, focus is placed in the home page edit field.  Input each website address you’d like to include in your home page tabs on individual lines.  For example:

www.blind.training
www.attrainers.com

After inputting the addresses, navigate to the OK button and activate the button with SPACEBAR. The home page for your browser is changed to the addresses input in the edit field. Each web page loads in a separate tab within the browser.

Navigate among the tabs with CTRL-TAB and CTRL-SHIFT-TAB.

Use the Currently Focused Web Page

Load the web pages you’d like to use as your tabbed home page within the browser window.  To create web pages on multiple tabs:

  • Open the first page you’d like to configure as your first tab
  • Press CTRL-T to open a new tab (Or activate “New Tab” within the File menu
  • Input the address of the next web page you’d like to load
  • Continue adding tabs until all the tabs you’d like to use for your home page are configured.

After loading the web pages you’d like to use as your home page, focus in the Internet Options dialog:

  • Open the Tools Menu (ALT-T)
  • Activate “Internet Options (O)

Within the dialog, navigate to the “Use Current” button and activate it. The addresses of each tab is placed in the edit field.  Navigate to the OK button and activate it to save the changes and close the dialog.

The focused tabs are now used as home page for Internet Explorer

Use a New Tab as the Home Page

If you don’t have a web page you’d like to use as your home page, you can configure Internet Explorer to open a new tab with focus in the address bar.  To configure a new tab as your home page:

  • Open the tools menu
  • Activate “Internet Options”

Within the dialog, navigate to “Use New Tab” and activate the button with SPACEBAR. Navigate to the OK button and activate the button to save the changes and close the dialog.

When focus moves to your home page, a new tab is created and focus is placed in the address bar.

Type the address you’d like to visit and press ENTER.

Restoring the Default Web Page

If you’re on a shared computer or in a work environment, you may wish to restore the home page to the factory default.  To restore the default web page in Internet Explorer:

  • Open the Tools menu (ALT-T)
  • Activate Internet Options (O)

Within the dialog, navigate to the “Use Default” button and activate the button to restore the default web site as the home page.

After activating the “Use Default” button, activate the OK button to save the changes and close the dialog.

Your home page is restored to the Internet Explorer factory default.

Remember! You can move focus to your home page at any time with the Internet Explorer command ALT-HOME.
